Sustainable Social Change Through Art Exhibits and Art Therapy

Jordan S. Potash, Ph.D., ATR-BC, LCAT is the Expressive Arts Therapy Program Coordinator for the Centre on Behavioral Health, University of Hong Kong. His focus is on social change, adolescence, and cross-cultural relationships. He is also a Professorial Lecturer in the Art Therapy Program at The George Washington University.

 

Incorporating nonviolent resistance ideology into art therapy creates a sustainable community development program based in the relational. Based on a qualitative study, this paper describes how art exhibits and structured viewing methods can help art viewers develop empathy and move toward prosocial behavior for artists living with mental illness.
