If silviculture is taken as the unique tool forestry provides in service to society, it needs to be applied on the ground as opposed to lofty statements of forest sustainability. The widespread incidence of high grading is not the application of good silviculture if it is silviculture at all. New York state is looked at as an example of the impact of high grading, including unrealized future income. Questions are raised as to the leadership, or lack thereof, of SAF with this issue, and what should and can SAF do.
